New Zealand Radiata Pine Sawmill
Established in 2000, Napier Pine Limited is a Hawke's Bay sawmill with over 25 years of milling experience. We convert New Zealand plantation logs into precision-sawn pinus radiata timber, supplied green or kiln-dried to a standard moisture content, and ship to buyers worldwide.
We are set up to work with wood products manufacturers, modifiers and remanufacturers who value consistent quality and reliable supply. Our FSC® Chain of Custody certification means we can meet the sourcing requirements of buyers in Europe, Japan, the USA, India and other regulated markets.
Our radiata pine has been supplied to wood modification operations internationally for many years, and we now offer thermally modified timber direct — giving buyers the option to source the finished product from us.
Wood Modification
We treat our radiata pine using heat and steam to produce a dimensionally stable, rot-resistant timber — chemical free. Our timber has long been supplied to modification operations internationally, and we now offer thermally modified radiata pine direct. The process draws the resin out, reduces moisture content, and results in a darker, richer colour that sits comfortably alongside tropical hardwoods.
The modification process removes resin and drives moisture content down, leaving a board that resists warping, shrinking and swelling far better than untreated timber. It holds up well against rot, decay and insect damage.
Heat treatment produces a consistent, darker tone through the full depth of the board. The colour is even and stable, giving thermally modified radiata pine a premium look well suited to decking, facades and cladding where appearance counts.
Exterior decking, façades, cladding, sauna interiors and flooring are the most common end uses — anywhere these properties are valuable, a chemical-free process is preferred, or where the appearance is the draw.

Radiata Pine Grades & Specifications
Every board that leaves our mill is graded to exacting standards. We supply New Zealand radiata pine (pinus radiata) sawn timber both green and kiln-dried. Kiln-dried stock is produced to 8–12% moisture content. We cover everything from Clear grades through to industrial grades, in standard and custom dimensions. Our sawn timber is also a well-established substrate for timber modification, with a long history of supply into modification operations worldwide.
Full-length clear boards entirely free of defects or features. This is the benchmark grade for any application where a completely uniform appearance is required. Typical end uses include furniture, clear mouldings and dressed boards. Also an excellent substrate for wood modification processes.
Full-length clear top face. The bottom face may include minor features such as resin pockets or small knots, provided they do not affect the best face. Well suited to furniture, clear mouldings, decking, cladding and wood modification applications.
Also known as Quarter Sawn. Graded to Clear 1 standard and fully free of defects. The vertical grain orientation delivers superior dimensional stability compared to flat sawn boards, meaning less movement and checking in outdoor conditions. Preferred for decking, cladding, veneering substrates and window and door joinery.
Contains defects not permitted in our Clear grades, including knots and resin pockets. A versatile intermediate grade well suited to applications where defects can be cut out to yield clear blocks, or kept as a natural feature. Common end uses include furniture, mouldings, millwork, fencing and remanufacturing for finger-jointed clears.
Heavy corewood component with major defects contained within specification. All boards must be sound on all four faces with no restriction on the defects they carry. The practical choice for pallets, packaging, crates, bins and temporary formwork.
A manufacturing grade for applications requiring long length clear components. A minimum of 80% board length must yield clear recovery, with the balance ideal for cross cutting and finger jointing into shorter clear blocks. Typical end uses include window and door components, furniture and mouldings.
All grades are available green or kiln-dried, packed and phytosanitary-certified for export. We supply buyers across Europe, Asia, North America and India. Bespoke grades and custom dimensions are available on request.
FSC Certified · Sustainably Sourced
For buyers in regulated markets such as Europe, Japan, the USA and India, sustainable sourcing is a procurement requirement, not a preference. Napier Pine holds FSC® Chain of Custody certification, meaning every piece of timber we supply can be traced back to a responsibly managed New Zealand plantation forest. No old-growth. No native timber. For buyers in Europe this is a legal requirement under EUDR — we have the documentation to support it.
We have also eliminated gas from our kiln drying process entirely. A biomass boiler now runs on the sawdust and wood chip our own milling produces, closing the loop on our energy use. Paired with New Zealand's 80% plus renewable electricity grid, our carbon footprint per cubic metre of sawn timber is among the lowest of any softwood producer in the world.
We source exclusively from New Zealand plantation forests. No old-growth timber, no native species. Every log comes from a managed, renewable resource operating on a 25 to 30 year rotation.
Our biomass boiler runs entirely on sawdust and wood chip from our own milling process. This has eliminated gas use in kiln drying. What was once a residue now powers the operation.
New Zealand generates over 80% of its electricity from renewable sources including hydro, geothermal and wind. Operating on one of the world's cleanest grids is a meaningful advantage for buyers tracking embodied carbon.
We employ locally in Hawke's Bay and invest in building their skills for the long term. A stable, experienced workforce is part of what makes our product consistent.
